MIAMI, FLA (September 26, 2011) – Rising junior formula car talent Gabby Chaves recently concluded his second full season of competition in Europe via a strong effort in the GP3 Series. As part of his continued march up the motorsports ladder, the highly-rated teenager showcased his raw pace, technical feedback, and maturity in and out of the cockpit against a premier field of talented racers. While some mechanical difficulties and poor luck during the season ultimately prevented Chaves from scoring a breakthrough win and challenging for the Rookie of the Year award, 2011 proved to be a rewarding campaign.
Chaves' dream since he first got behind the wheel in racing has always been to become a Formula One driver and World Champion. In 2011, he took another step in reaching that goal by entering the GP3 Series with the Addax Team squad. As an official development championship for F1, GP3 attracts a who's who of up-and-coming formula car talent. After winning the Formula 3 Italian Championship Rookie of the Year award in his inaugural season Europe racing in 2010, Chaves was right at home in the competitive series.
Now given Chaves had not raced, or even visited the majority of the tracks, unlike most his GP3 counterparts, prior to the season getting underway, the goal was to get up to speed quickly and make the most of every session on track. The Intrepid and Comcel supported driver promptly indicated he was more than capable of going head-to-head against the more experienced championship favorites, earning a top-10 finish in his series debut in Turkey. While some unexpected challenges tested the 18 year-old's resolve during the 16-race campaign, he rose to the challenges. Highlighting his ever-growing race craft, Chaves captured two top-fives – fourth and fifth on the treacherous Valencia street circuit – and five top-10s in what was an impressive rookie GP3 Series season.
"I definitely learned a lot this season," stated Chaves. "The level of talent in the GP3 Series means that as a rookie you really have to push yourself every time you get behind the wheel. While some bad luck and some mechanical problems forced me down the championship standings, I think I showed I can challenge for top honors on any given weekend. The goal now is to continue getting better and work even harder to reach my dream of F1."
Chaves has already begun preparations for the 2012 season by talking with teams and trying to secure proper funding. The talented teenager is looking at either returning to the GP3 Series with a championship-contending team, or making the move to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.
